Christian VIII's reign saw persistent tension between the crown and growing constitutional reform movements, particularly in Schleswig-Holstein. This minor copper issue was struck as Denmark quietly modernized its currency system under the Rigsbank — the state bank established in 1818 after the catastrophic national bankruptcy of 1813, which had wiped out the old currency entirely. The 1/5 rigsbankskilling denomination itself reflects the awkward subdivision arithmetic inherited from that post-bankruptcy monetary reorganization.
