Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a bold, stylised cross pattée rendered in high relief, dividing the field into four quadrants, each containing a letter or numeral forming the motto and date: 'IN HOC SIGNO VINCES' (In this sign you shall conquer) alongside the numerals '2 1 6 5', referencing the historical denomination. The cross design is inspired by early Portuguese gold coinage, particularly the cruzado. The engraver's signature 'R. VASQUEZ' appears in the lower right field, and the mint name 'CASA DA MOEDA' is inscribed in the upper right quadrant. A beaded border encircles the entire composition.

Additional information

The "Engenhoso" — roughly translatable as "the ingenious one" — is the Portuguese nickname for Odysseus, drawn from Luís de Camões's framing of classical heroes within a distinctly Iberian literary sensibility. This coin belongs to INCM's Numismatic Treasures series, which uses the legally peculiar 1.5 euro denomination precisely because it carries no transactional obligation under EU monetary law, allowing the issuer to price collector pieces freely above face value without regulatory conflict.
