Montpellier's 1,5 euro issue was part of the wave of French municipal "euro" tokens struck in 1997, well ahead of the single currency's 1999 launch. Dozens of French towns issued these pieces as a promotional exercise — and a revenue one — capitalizing on public curiosity about a currency most citizens had never handled. They were never legal tender in any meaningful sense, functioning instead as local commerce vouchers accepted by participating merchants for a limited period.
