Spain's Royal Mint has produced an extended series of wildlife-themed issues under the nominal value of 1.5 euros — a denomination that has no legal tender circulation use and exists purely as a collector vehicle. The Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is listed as endangered by the IUCN, with the Mekong River subpopulation reduced to fewer than 100 individuals as of recent surveys. The freshwater populations in the Ayeyarwady and Mahakam rivers fare only marginally better.
