Spain's Eurofighter commemorative was issued the same year the Ejército del Aire marked the aircraft's two decades of operational service with the Spanish Air Force, which received its first Typhoons in 1999 under the Halcón program. The 1.5 euro denomination is a Spanish convention for legal-tender collector pieces with no circulating equivalent — a format the Real Casa de la Moneda has used extensively since the early 2000s to monetize themed series without disrupting the circulating coinage supply.
