Millau's 1997 local currency token was issued during the brief flourishing of French *monnaies de nécessité* produced by municipalities and regional chambers of commerce throughout the 1990s — a largely forgotten episode in which dozens of French towns issued brass or bimetallic pieces redeemable locally, functioning as promotional scrip rather than legal tender. Millau, a town in the Aveyron historically dependent on glove-making and leather trade, issued this piece well before the Millau Viaduct brought the region international attention.
