San Marcos Castle in El Puerto de Santa María served as one of the primary departure points for Columbus's second voyage in 1493, a detail that gives this issue its historical hook. Alfonso X ordered the original fortification in the 13th century on the site of a mosque, incorporating the mosque's prayer hall into the structure — an architectural palimpsest that survives to the present day.
The 1.5 euro denomination is peculiar to Spain's ongoing "Joyas de Nuestra Historia" circulation-collector series, struck in quantities sufficient for general release but marketed principally to collectors.
