Beschrijving voorzijde Full-color photographic depiction of the Castle of Manzanares el Real, a late 15th-century Gothic-Mudéjar fortress rendered in warm golden tones against a dramatic clouded sky, with green meadows in the foreground and a small Spanish flag visible atop the central tower. The castle is shown in three-quarter perspective, revealing its characteristic cylindrical corner towers with merlons and machicolations. The legend MANZANARES EL REAL arches across the upper field in white lettering, while ESPAÑA 2023 is inscribed along the lower border. The entire central motif is framed by a decorative milled border of stylized battlements and arrow motifs in relief, evoking medieval castellan architecture.

Aanvullende informatie

Manzanares el Real was begun in the 1440s under Íñigo López de Mendoza and completed by his son Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, second Duke of the Infantado — one of the most powerful noble families in fifteenth-century Castile. It is among the best-preserved late Gothic castles on the Iberian Peninsula, largely because it saw almost no military use after construction, spending much of its history as a ducal residence rather than a fortress.

The 1.5 euro denomination is Spain's standard vehicle for its ongoing architectural heritage series, issued for domestic collector circulation rather than everyday use.
