The Castle of Bellver, built in the early 14th century under Jaume II of Majorca, is one of the very few circular Gothic castles in Europe. Spain's 1.5 euro series — a denomination that circulates nowhere and exists purely as a collector vehicle — has systematically worked through Iberian architectural landmarks since its introduction, and the Bellver entry fits that pattern.
The castle served as a royal residence for roughly two decades before becoming a prison, a function it held for centuries. The philosopher Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos was among its more famous inmates, confined there from 1801 to 1808.
