Obverse description Armored bust of Philip II of Spain facing right, wearing a ruffled collar and pauldron, with a Zeeland counterstamp of a lion emerging from waves applied to the field. The obverse legend runs along the periphery in Latin, identifying the ruler as king of Spain and Count of Flanders. The portrait is rendered in the characteristic late-Renaissance hammered style typical of Low Countries coinage of the third quarter of the sixteenth century. A fleur-de-lis privy mark is incorporated within the legend.
