Gibraltar's 1990 FIFA World Cup series was one of the earliest instances of a British Overseas Territory issuing a multi-piece platinum proof program tied to a sporting event, exploiting the Crown Dependencies' and Overseas Territories' separate numismatic licensing rights that London had progressively relaxed through the 1980s. The KM#78a is the platinum variant of a design also struck in gold and silver — a deliberate three-metal strategy that became a template for Gibraltar's collector output well into the following decade.
Mintages for the platinum strikes in this series were extremely low, figures rarely confirmed in published records.
