Sir Walter Raleigh's connection to the Isle of Man is essentially nonexistent, making this a purely commemorative issue capitalizing on the 400th anniversary of his fall from royal favor under James I. Raleigh was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1603 — the same year James acceded — accused of treason in the Main Plot conspiracy, a charge historians have long considered politically convenient rather than substantively proven.
The Isle of Man Treasury issued numerous gold fractionals in this period targeting the collector market rather than circulation. Mintages were typically tightly capped.
