| Reverse description | The reverse presents a richly composed commemorative design honoring the Venetian explorer Marco Polo (1254–1324). A detailed left-facing portrait bust of Polo dominates the left portion of the field, depicted in period costume with a flat cap and draped cloak. To his right, a rendering of the Palace of Kublai Khan in Beijing is shown in architectural relief, with the inscription PALACE OF KUBLAI KHAN · BEIJING · positioned above it in the field. Along the lower portion of the field, a procession of laden camels evokes the Silk Road caravans of Polo's journeys. The arc legend MARCO POLO 1254 - 1324 runs along the upper border, while AU. 1/5 OZ. CROWN and the fineness mark 999.9 appear in the lower field and exergue respectively. |
