The American Numismatic Association's centennial congress was held in Chicago in 1991, and the Pobjoy Mint — working under license from the Isle of Man government — produced this piece as an official commemorative issue for the event. Pobjoy had by that point established itself as the dominant producer of collector-oriented Isle of Man gold, issuing dozens of themed fractional crown types annually through the 1980s and into the 1990s, a volume that drew both dedicated collectors and considerable skepticism about long-term numismatic value.
Mintage figures for individual Pobjoy ANA issues of this period were typically kept low and sold directly through convention channels.
