The Isle of Man has issued commemorative coinage under royal warrant since the 1970s, and by the 2000s the Pobjoy Mint had made the island one of the more prolific sources of themed gold issues in the Commonwealth. This FIFA World Cup piece appeared ahead of the Germany-hosted tournament — the first World Cup held in Germany since 1974, and the one remembered partly for Zidane's headbutt in the final.
