Stolberg-Stolberg spent much of the eighteenth century under joint rule, a product of inheritance arrangements that kept the county divided between collateral lines rather than consolidated. Jost Christian and Christoph Ludwig II ruled together from 1704 until Jost Christian's death in 1739 — the same year this coin was struck — making it almost certainly a terminal issue of their joint coinage.
At 1/48 Thaler, this is the smallest silver fraction in regular Stolberg emission, produced primarily for local market transactions in a county with negligible political weight but a surprisingly active mint history documented through Müseler's exhaustive regional survey.
