Charles I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel spent much of the Seven Years' War navigating the impossible position of a small German principality caught between Prussian and French military operations. French forces occupied Wolfenbüttel itself in 1757, and the financial strain of the conflict — combined with occupation disruptions — forced repeated recourse to debased small coinage. The 1760–1761 dating of this issue places it squarely in the war's grinding final years, when billon fractions like this were the only practical currency keeping local commerce moving.
