The Mutawakkilite Kingdom's aluminium fractional issues from the mid-1950s were produced under Imam Ahmad ibn Yahya, who maintained Yemen's near-total isolation from foreign influence while paradoxically contracting overseas mints to strike his coinage. This particular variety — distinguished by the smaller 'Sanaa' spelling alongside the 'Sana' form — reflects the inconsistent die preparation that plagued Ahmad's issues, likely the result of working with engravers unfamiliar with Arabic orthographic conventions.
