He raises his right hand in benediction and holds the Gospels in his left hand, clad in richly detailed robes. The mandorla is surrounded by a beaded or jewelled border, and the entire composition is encircled by the split Latin legend ·EGO·SVM· ·LVX·MVN·, an abbreviated reference to the Gospel of John (8:12): 'Ego sum lux mundi' ('I am the light of the world'). The design closely follows the long-established iconographic formula of the Venetian zecchino, maintaining the solemn, frontal Byzantine aesthetic. A beaded outer border frames the reverse field. |
