Obverse description Standing figure of Saint Mark the Evangelist, nimbed and draped, facing the kneeling Doge Alvise Mocenigo III who is shown in profile to the right in ceremonial robes. Saint Mark extends a banner or standard topped with a cross toward the Doge, a traditional investiture scene characteristic of Venetian ducal coinage. The Latin legend ALOY·MOC S·M·VE DVX encircles the design, identifying the Doge and Saint Mark as patron of Venice. The figures are rendered in the archaic Byzantine-influenced style characteristic of Venetian gold coinage, with fine detail in the drapery and facial features. A beaded border frames the entire composition.
