| Obverse description | Right-facing crowned bust of Emperor Menelik II, wearing an ornate imperial crown and beaded collar, his full beard rendered in fine detail. The effigy is framed at the base by a wreath of laurel branches. A circular Ge'ez legend surrounds the portrait within a beaded border, giving the emperor's full imperial title and the Ethiopian Era date 1889 (= 1897 AD) in the lower exergue. |
