The Ilergetes occupied the territory around modern Lleida in northeastern Iberia and were among the few indigenous peoples to actively negotiate their position during the Second Punic War rather than simply submit to one side. Their leaders Indibilis and Mandonius famously switched allegiances between Carthage and Rome more than once, a political maneuver that ultimately ended in Indibilis's death during a revolt against Rome in 205 BC — just after this coin's likely production window closed.
