The Ilergetes were the Iberian tribe whose territory centered on the middle Ebro valley — the same people led by Indibilis and Mandonius, chieftains who shifted allegiance between Carthage and Rome more than once during the Second Punic War. This small bronze was struck precisely as that war tore through their homeland, with Hannibal crossing nearby in 218 BC and Roman forces establishing a foothold at Emporion the same year.
Iltirta became one of the more prolific Iberian minting centers of the conflict period, producing fractional bronzes likely to facilitate local market exchange as traditional trade networks collapsed under military occupation.
