Saguntum's loyalty to Rome during the Second Punic War — the city endured an eight-month Carthaginian siege in 219 BC rather than capitulate, an event Livy treated as the war's moral ignition point — gave it unusual autonomy in subsequent decades. The right to strike local bronze coinage was part of that accommodation, allowing the Edetani community to maintain a commercial identity under Roman hegemony without issuing silver.
