Reverse description A large, naturalistic crowned thistle occupies the center of the field, its leaves and spines rendered in considerable detail, with the imperial crown rising above the flowerhead. The thistle, emblematic of Scotland, fills most of the available field within a beaded inner circle. The date appears incorporated into the peripheral legend, which is separated by pellet stops. The overall design is bold and characteristic of the Scottish hammered silver coinage of James VI's eighth coinage issue.
