Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the crowned royal arms of Scotland are displayed on a shield bearing a rampant lion, the whole framed by an ornate crowned escutcheon. The royal crown surmounts the shield at top center. The surrounding legend in Latin reads in an arc around the periphery of the flan, separated by pellet stops. The field and devices exhibit the characteristic irregular surfaces typical of hammered coinage of the period.
