1/4 Thaler - Paris von Lodron Consecration

Paris von Lodron consecrated the Salzburg Cathedral on 25 September 1628, completing a rebuilding project begun after the original Romanesque structure was largely destroyed by fire in 1598. The ceremony was one of the most elaborately staged ecclesiastical events in early modern Central Europe, attended by numerous princes of the Church. Lodron commissioned a series of commemorative coins — spanning multiple denominations — specifically to mark the occasion, a practice with deep roots in Habsburg-aligned ecclesiastical patronage.

The quarter thaler sits at the lower end of that commemorative series, likely intended for broader distribution rather than princely gifts.
