背面描述 The entire reverse field is occupied by a nine-line funerary inscription in Roman capital letters, commemorating the life and death of Grand Master Maximilian Francis, surmounted at the top of the field by a small Teutonic cross. The inscription records his birth date, his election as Coadjutor Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, his inauguration, the date of his death given in both Old Style and New Style calendar dates, and closes with the funerary formula R:I:P (Requiescat In Pace). The plain field and stark typographic layout lend the reverse a solemn, memorial character befitting its commemorative purpose.

附加信息

Max Franz of Austria, the last active Grand Master of the Teutonic Order to hold meaningful territorial power, died in 1801 having already watched Napoleon dismantle much of the Order's secular holdings in the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss negotiations then underway. This commemorative issue was struck in anticipation of, or response to, his death — a funerary convention the Order had maintained for Grand Masters since the early modern period. Within two years, the 1803 Reichsdeputationshauptschluss formally dissolved what remained of the Order's German estates.
