Elisabeth Krauss served as Nuremberg's mint master from 1782 until the city lost its independence to Bavaria in 1806, one of the very few women to hold such a position in the Holy Roman Empire. The klippe format — struck on a square planchet rather than a round one — was by this date largely reserved for presentation pieces and admission medals, not everyday currency. This piece almost certainly functioned as a Meisterstück or guild presentation strike rather than a circulating coin.
