1/4 Thaler - John William of Jülich-Kleve-Berg

John William, Duke of Jülich-Kleve-Berg, suffered severe mental illness that left him incapacitated for much of the 1580s and 1590s. His incapacity triggered one of the most dangerous succession crises in early modern Germany — the Jülich-Cleves succession dispute — which would outlast him and nearly ignite a general European war after his death in 1609. Ravensberg was among the constituent territories administered under his nominal authority during this period, coinage issuing in his name despite his effective absence from governance.

The .892 fineness places this squarely within the pre-Kipper und Wipper debasement period, before silver coinage across the region collapsed in quality after 1618.
