| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a draped catafalque or funeral bier surmounted by a canopy with fringed valance and a crown at its apex, symbolising the lying-in-state of the deceased duke. Inscribed on the face of the bier is the legend RECTOR ACADEMIÆ IENENSIS MAGNIFICENTISS, honouring John William as the most magnificent rector of the University of Jena, while the left panel records his age of XV years, VII months, and XII days. A circular rope-beaded outer border contains the circumferential legend IOH:WILH:DVX SAX·I·C·M·ANG:ET WESTPH· NON PERITVRA NEGE·, identifying the duke by his full titles and the motto 'not to perish'. The composition is typical of late seventeenth-century German memorial coinage, combining heraldic and allegorical funerary imagery with precise biographical detail. |
