Obverse description Central field features a caduceus — a winged staff entwined by two serpents — surmounted by the crowned Saxon coat of arms with wings spread to either side, emitting rays of light from above. Below the caduceus, a detailed panoramic townscape depicts buildings, a church spire, and hilly terrain on both sides, evoking the city of Jena. The engraver's initials 'H I W' appear in the lower exergue beneath the townscape. The legend TUETUR ET ORNAT ('He protects and adorns') is inscribed vertically along the left and right margins of the field in Latin capitals.
