Reverse description A tall palm tree rises prominently from a rocky coastal island in the centre of the field, its fronds spreading broadly across the upper half of the design. The island is surrounded by stylised ocean waves, with a sailing vessel visible on the left horizon and a larger full-rigged ship to the right, alluding to maritime trade and the duke's ambitions. The date 1673 appears in the lower exergual area. The motto EX DURIS GLORIA arches around the upper field, conveying the theme of glory arising from hardship, a fitting dynastic emblem in the Baroque emblem tradition.
