Obverse description Draped bust of Duke John Adolphus facing right, wearing an elaborately decorated armored cuirass with a prominent ruff collar. The hair is rendered in wavy, naturalistic style characteristic of early 17th-century German portraiture. The legend is divided by the portrait, reading partially to the left and partially to the right within a beaded inner border. The effigy is executed in high relief with fine detailing on the armor and lace collar, consistent with the hammered coinage of the Gottorp mint.
