Obverse description Draped bust of Prince-Bishop Johann Konrad II von Reinach-Hirzbach facing right, wearing a long curled wig and ecclesiastical vestments with a prominent chain or pectoral cross visible at the chest. The portrait is rendered in high relief in a naturalistic Baroque style. The circumferential legend in Latin reads IOANNES·CONRADVS·DEI·GRAT*, an abbreviation of 'by the grace of God', interrupted by a decorative stop at the conclusion. A fine beaded inner border frames the design.

Additional information

Johann Konrad II von Reinach-Hirzbach served as Prince-Bishop of Basel from 1705 until his death in 1737, presiding over a diocese whose political situation was genuinely peculiar — the city of Basel itself had been Protestant since 1529, forcing the bishop's seat to relocate to Porrentruy, where it remained until the French annexation in 1792. This quarter thaler dates to the middle of his episcopate, a period of relative stability after the disruptions of the War of the Spanish Succession had receded from the region's borders.

The Bishopric's coinage output was modest and infrequent, making individual issues like this one scarcer than their surviving numbers suggest.
