Additional information

Georg Wilhelm, the last Piast duke of Liegnitz-Brieg, died in 1675 without a male heir. The Habsburg emperor Leopold I immediately seized the duchy, extinguishing a ruling house that had governed Silesia for over four centuries. This coin was struck as a memorial issue marking that death — and simultaneously, though perhaps unintentionally, marking the end of an independent Silesian dynastic coinage tradition altogether. The Habsburgs absorbed the mint along with the territory.
