Franz Anton von Harrach served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1709 until his death in 1727, inheriting a diocese still financially strained from the costly War of the Spanish Succession. This quarter thaler was struck in the first full year of his tenure, when the Salzburg mint was actively producing silver coinage across multiple denominations to assert the archbishopric's continued status as an independent ecclesiastical principality within the Holy Roman Empire.
