Obverse description Draped bust of Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg facing right, with long flowing hair resting on his shoulders, wearing a lace-trimmed collar and mantle. The effigy is rendered in high relief in a naturalistic late Baroque style. A continuous Latin legend encircles the bust within a beaded border, reading D: G: ERNESTUS SAX IUL: CLIV: ET MONTIUM DUX.

Reverse description The reverse bears an entirely epigraphic design with no figural elements, presenting a multi-line Latin funerary inscription filling the field within a beaded border. The text records the birth, death, length of reign, age, and date of interment of Duke Ernest I, arranged in seven centered lines. The inscription commemorates his birth on 25 December 1601, his death on 26 March 1675, a reign of 35 years, an age of 73 years and 3 months, and his burial on 4 June 1675.
