Portuguese India maintained its own copper fractional coinage well into the colonial period, but production capability on the subcontinent was limited. The Calcutta Mint struck these pieces under contract — an arrangement the Portuguese relied on repeatedly for their Indian territories when Lisbon or Goa could not meet local demand efficiently. The eight-year span of this issue reflects steady but unspectacular circulation needs in a colony where the tanga system coexisted awkwardly with British Imperial currency pressing in from all sides.
