August II — Elector of Saxony as Friedrich August I — secured the Polish crown in 1697 through bribery on a staggering scale, distributing roughly two million thalers among the szlachta electors and converting to Catholicism as a practical prerequisite. His Dresden mint struck Polish-denominated coinage throughout his reign, a deliberate policy of projecting royal authority over a commonwealth whose nobility had spent decades systematically dismantling it. The coin exists because a Saxon prince needed to look like a Polish king.
Kopicki 11136 places this among the better-documented Dresden issues, though die variety attribution within the type remains an active area among specialists working the August II series.
