The Regency of Algiers operated as an Ottoman tributary state under a succession of deys, and by Mahmud II's reign the regency's coinage had grown increasingly detached from Istanbul's monetary standards. Local gold fractions like this quarter sultani were struck at Algiers for internal use, their weights drifting well below Ottoman norms — a reflection of the dey's practical autonomy rather than formal independence.
The nineteen-year emission span ended abruptly with the French invasion of June 1830, which dissolved the regency entirely.
