Reverse description A short-armed cross with floriated terminals occupies the center of the field, with the numeral '4' placed in the central point of the cross to denote the denomination. The four angles formed by the cross arms are alternately filled with fleurs-de-lis and passant lions, arranged in a quartered pattern characteristic of Guelders-related civic issues of this period. The overall design is compact and boldly struck within the irregular flan typical of hammered copper coinage.

Additional information

Nijmegen struck these copper fractionals during the early years of the Eighty Years' War, when the city's access to silver was severely disrupted by Spanish military pressure and the general chaos of the Dutch Revolt. Small-denomination copper coinage of this period was an emergency measure — municipal authorities issuing what the central mints could not reliably supply. The city had already passed to the Union of Utrecht in 1579, and these pieces circulated within a local economy under persistent military threat.

The short two-year window of production and the coin's low intrinsic value meant heavy circulation and high attrition. Survivors in collectible condition are genuinely scarce.
