The 1577 date places this coin squarely in the opening violence of the Dutch Revolt, the same year the Pacification of Ghent briefly united the provinces against Spanish garrison troops before the Union of Arras and Union of Utrecht shattered that alliance. Guelders, occupying the northeastern frontier, was perpetually contested ground — its mint operating under conditions of profound administrative instability as loyalties shifted between Philip II's appointed governors and the emergent States authority.
The "Statenoord" designation reflects issues struck under States oversight rather than direct Spanish crown control, a distinction with real political weight in 1577.
