James of Bronckhorst held Anholt as an imperial lordship under the Holy Roman Empire, and his coinage rights were perpetually contested by neighboring ecclesiastical and secular powers jockeying for monetary control along the lower Rhine corridor. The quarter stiver denomination in billon — a debased silver-copper alloy — reflects the chronic shortage of small change that plagued the region's market towns throughout the late fifteenth century.

Van der Chijs's plate reference remains the primary scholarly anchor for attributing Anholt issues of this period; the series is sparsely documented and individual die combinations rarely surface for comparison.
