Cunobeline ruled the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes from his capital at Camulodunum — modern Colchester — making him the most powerful British ruler of his generation and the historical figure Shakespeare later transmuted into Cymbeline. This quarter stater belongs to his 'T' series, named for the prominent letter that distinguishes it from his other fractional gold issues, and likely circulated among elite transactions in the decades immediately before the Claudian invasion of 43 AD rendered the entire native coinage system obsolete.
