The Royal National Lifeboat Institution celebrated its bicentenary in 2024, but commemorative issues began appearing several years ahead of that milestone — this Alderney quarter sovereign is part of that run-up series. The RNLI operates entirely on voluntary donations, a financial structure unchanged since Sir William Hillary founded the institution in 1824 after witnessing repeated shipwrecks off the Isle of Man coast.
Roy Barker I was an Oakley-class lifeboat stationed at Filey, North Yorkshire. The Oakley design, introduced in the 1950s, was notable for its self-righting capability without the use of water ballast — a significant engineering departure from earlier lifeboat generations.
