Gibraltar has issued quarter sovereigns continuously since 1999, leveraging its status as a British Overseas Territory to produce legal tender gold coinage outside Royal Mint oversight. This particular piece commemorates the 1982 Falklands conflict, in which Gibraltar itself played a logistical role — the territory served as a staging and resupply point for the naval task force before it moved south into the Atlantic.
The KM#1645 attribution places it within a sprawling Gibraltar commemorative program that has drawn criticism from some catalogers for its volume over selectivity.
