Alderney occupied a peculiar position during the Battle of Britain: it was the only British territory permanently evacuated before German occupation, its civilian population removed in June 1940 just days before Wehrmacht forces landed. The island remained under occupation for the entirety of the war. That a coin commemorating the RAF's finest hour should be issued under Alderney's authority carries an irony the catalog entry won't flag.
The Hawker Hurricane, often overshadowed by the Spitfire in popular memory, actually destroyed more Luftwaffe aircraft during the battle due to its numerical superiority in RAF squadrons.
