Gibraltar's fractional sovereign issues occupy an awkward commercial space — technically legal tender on the Rock, practically aimed at the bullion gift market. This 2015 piece marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe's summer and autumn air campaign of 1940 that Hitler's planners had expected to conclude in four weeks. It ran four months and failed entirely, forcing the indefinite postponement of Operation Sea Lion.
Gibraltar itself was a Luftwaffe target during the war, though attacks were sporadic and largely ineffective against the fortress's deep tunnel network.
