The quarter sovereign format was revived by the Royal Mint for the British domestic market in 2009, having last appeared in regular circulation during the reign of George III. Its adoption by British Overseas Territory mints — issuing under royal authority but outside the Royal Mint's direct production — reflects an ongoing commercial arrangement that lets territories monetize the format without competing with London's own collector issues. The Falkland Islands has leaned heavily into this niche since the 2010s.
Pistrucci's St. George design, used here, dates to 1817 and has never been formally retired from the sovereign series in over two centuries of use.
